2004 draws to a close and, as is customary at this time of year, it's a time to look back at what has been happening on the Internet over the last twelve months (with the last two Chronicles of the year being devoted to just that).

The search engine Google has been the big name of the year, although honorable mentions also go to weblogs and to the digital music phenomenon, to the growth of online advertising, e-commerce and broadband, as well as the consolidation of some of the other major dotcom firms, like Yahoo!, eBay and Amazon.com.
